VIOLIN

Patty Kates has been a member of the Violin section of the Grand Rapids Symphony since 2002. Patty was born and raised in Oak Park, Illinois. She began playing the violin when she was eight years old through the Suzuki Violin Program of Oak Park. Patty received her Bachelor's Degree in Violin Performance at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1992. She then furthered her studies with Stephen Shipps at the University of Michigan, where she received her Master's Degree in Violin Performance in 1995. Patty currently teaches at the Crescendo Academy of Music in Kalamazoo and the Suzuki Academy of Kalamazoo. She resides in Kalamazoo with her husband, John Perkins, and their two children, Elena and Hank.
