Judith Kemph
Judith Kemph has been a member of the Grand Rapids Symphony since 1976. She began study of the flute at age ten, and piccolo at age thirteen. While in high school, Ms. Kemph was chosen to play piccolo in the Musical Youth International wind ensemble, which toured Japan and the U.S. She earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in flute performance at the University of Michigan. While there, she was principal piccolo in the University of Michigan Symphony Band, which toured the U.S. and Europe. She also played both flute and piccolo in the University orchestras.
For six summers Ms. Kemph participated in the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado. There she was awarded the piccolo fellowship contract for the three year maximum. She has also been a member of the Canary Islands Opera Orchestra, the Flint Symphony, and the Baroque and Beyond Chamber Ensemble of Grand Rapids.
Ms. Kemph has appeared as soloist in the Grand Rapids Symphony's Heritage Hill Series, the Lollipops Series, the Symphony in the Schools Concerts, the Casual Classics Series, Pops Series, and Picnic Pops Concerts. Ms. Kemph has enjoyed working with many private flute and piccolo students. She taught flute at Grand Valley State University from 1986 to 2007. As a member of a Grand Rapids Symphony Instrument Discovery Ensemble, a trio consisting of flute, violin, and cello, Ms. Kemph performs for and speaks to elementary school students throughout the greater Grand Rapids area.
